Since Lima is the capital city of Peru it is one of the largest and most crowded. It overlooks the Pacific ocean and is the fifth largest city in Latin America. The city was founded on January 18th, 1535 (Lima). It was not always called Lima,

however. The city was first called "The City of the Kings" (Lima). The city played a key role in the Peruvian war for Independence. Since then it has grown in size to one of the major tourist attractions of Peru. One third of the total population of Peru lives in Lima (Lima)! This makes it a business and cultural center for the country. Many tourists visit, bringing money into the city. Many come just to see the famous mist that surrounds the city between May and October (Lima). Natives call this beautiful mist Garua. Other tourists visit Lima for the famous white sand beaches nearby, or to shop in the open market places.
